Kundli Milan: How 36 Gun Matching Works (and How Many Gunas Should Match)

By the KundliSetu team · Published October 2026 · 7 min read

Before a Hindu marriage, families often ask for kundli milan, also called gun milan or kundli matching. The astrologer compares the two birth charts and gives a score out of 36. This guide explains what that score is made of, what a good score looks like, and what the words Nadi dosha and Bhakoot dosha actually mean, without the fear that often comes with them.

What is kundli milan?

Kundli milan is the traditional Vedic method of checking compatibility between two people before marriage. The most widely used system is Ashtakoota guna milan, which compares the position of the Moon at birth in each person's chart. Specifically it uses the Moon's rashi (zodiac sign) and nakshatra (lunar mansion) to score eight areas of life, called kootas. The eight scores add up to a maximum of 36 gunas (points).

That is why people say "36 gun milan": 36 is the full score, not the number of things being checked.

The 8 kootas and their points

Each koota looks at a different side of the relationship and carries a different maximum score. Together they make 36.

KootaMax pointsWhat it traditionally looks at
Varna1Spiritual and ego compatibility; how the two people approach life's purpose
Vashya2Mutual attraction and how well the two adapt to each other
Tara3Compatibility of the birth stars; linked to well-being and luck together
Yoni4Physical and intimate compatibility
Graha Maitri5Mental wavelength and friendship, from the relationship between the two Moon-sign lords
Gana6Temperament and nature (Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa)
Bhakoot7Emotional bond, family harmony and shared prosperity
Nadi8Health, constitution and compatibility for children

Notice that Nadi (8) and Bhakoot (7) carry the most points. That is why these two come up the most in conversations about doshas.

How many gunas should match for marriage?

The commonly quoted rule of thumb is that at least 18 out of 36 should match. Many astrologers read the score in bands like these:

These bands are a convention, not a law. Different astrologers and traditions apply them with some flexibility, so treat them as a starting point for conversation.

Nadi dosha explained

Nadi is the highest-scoring koota (8 points). There are three Nadis: Aadi, Madhya and Antya. If both people fall in the same Nadi, they score 0 out of 8 on this koota, and this is called Nadi dosha. Traditionally it is linked to concerns about health and children.

Two things are worth knowing. First, a zero in Nadi is not automatically the end of a match: many traditions list conditions under which the dosha is considered reduced or cancelled, and an experienced astrologer will check these. Second, losing 8 points means the best possible score drops to 28, so a match can still be strong on the other seven kootas.

Bhakoot dosha explained

Bhakoot (7 points) compares the position of the two Moon signs. When the signs sit in certain pairings from each other, namely 2–12, 5–9 or 6–8, the koota scores 0 out of 7 and is called Bhakoot dosha. It is traditionally associated with emotional understanding and family prosperity.

As with Nadi, classical texts describe situations where Bhakoot dosha is cancelled, for example when the Moon-sign lords are the same planet or friends. A good matching report states whether the dosha is cancelled rather than just showing a zero.

Is the guna score enough?

Guna milan is one useful input, not the whole decision. It is based only on the Moon's position in two charts. Astrologers usually also look at:

A balanced view: astrology is a cultural and traditional guide. It cannot predict outcomes with certainty, and it should never replace honest conversations between the two people and their families about values, finances, family expectations and life goals.

What if the birth time is unknown?

Guna milan depends on the Moon's rashi and nakshatra, and the Moon moves roughly 13 degrees a day, about one nakshatra per day. So even without the exact time, the date and place of birth often give a usable Moon position. The catch: on dates when the Moon changes sign or nakshatra during the day, the exact time decides which one applies, and the result could differ.

If you don't know the time, a good report tells you when the Moon changes sign or nakshatra on that date so you know how much to trust the result. If your family has a hospital record, birth certificate or an old horoscope, that is the best source of the exact time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum guna milan score for marriage?

Traditionally 18 out of 36. Scores of 25 and above are generally read as very good. The threshold is a guideline, and astrologers look at other factors too.

Is kundli matching necessary?

It is a tradition followed by many Hindu families, not a requirement. Whether to use it, and how much weight to give it, is a personal and family decision.

What is the difference between guna milan and kundli milan?

Guna milan is the point-scoring part (the 36 gunas). Kundli milan is the broader term and can also include checks like Manglik status and the 7th house.

Can the match be done without a birth time?

Often yes for the Moon-based score, but results can differ on dates when the Moon changes sign or nakshatra. See the section above.

Does a Nadi dosha mean the marriage will fail?

No. It reduces the score by 8 points, and many traditions describe conditions that cancel or soften it. Discuss it calmly with a qualified astrologer rather than treating it as a verdict.
